The magical home town of Santa Claus Who has white beard, red funny clothes and all the people on this planet knows his name?
Of course it is our Santa Claus, , who spreads the Christmas spirit and joy to everybody. Santa Claus is known in different countries by different name, like in Sweden he is called “Julgubbe” and in Germany “Weichnacthsman”, also in Great Britain he is called as “Father Christmas” and in Austriaa as “Nikolaus”.
Santa’s job is quite unusual compared to normal office worker since we know him by coming through the chimney and leaving the Christmas presents to special socks hanging from the fireplace. However in Finland for instance, Santa even visits the families and gives the presents in person and usually he is being offered by listening to caroling children and some fresh baked cookies and milk since after all, he has the most difficult job in the world to manage to visit every household from Canada to Italy during Christmas time.
For centuries, there have been debates which place on this planet has the honor to call itself Santa Claus’s hometown. Well, the debate’s result is quite the obvious, it is of course a place called Rovaniemi, a city of snow and ice located in the northern part of Lapland in Finland. Many does not know that Rovaniemi’s Santa Claus village was not originally from there but rather a decision of Santa Claus to come closer and become more visible to all the children of the world, and of course child-like minded people too.
The original Santa Claus’s village is located further north a secret place called Korvatunturi. Korvatunturi is the most best kept secret in the whole wide world since there is where the magic happens actually and Santa wants it to keep it that way in the future. Santa and partners wanted to be close to people and get to know them better, so they decided to establish a special Santa village to Rovaniemi.
And why Rovaniemi? This town has a special place in Santa’s heart since it is located in the middle of Arctic Circle. Bordering on the Arctic, Rovaniemi is a unique place to experience quite ravishing seasonal changes. In the summertime there is light and sun is shining around the clock and in the wintertime there is not sunlight at all and it is dark. Crossing the Arctic Circle is a very special tradition and visitors have developed many ways to cross it. Even certificates of proof, crossing the Arctic Circle is given to visitors of Santa’s village.
Another intriguing miracle of nature can be found from Rovaniemi. This miracle is called The Northern Lights. Every winter it is possible to see in the clear sky these magical lights which colors are equal to rainbow’s. Many stories and beliefs are linked to Northern lights. One of the popular tales is a tale of a fox which once upon a time had such a hurry to run to the annual championships of wickedness that while this fox was running to this competition in such a rush, its tail went down due to fast speed and this tail made sparks to the hard snow. These sparks are also seen as the Northern Lights. Although this is a tale, the real truth of the Northern Lights are even crazier what you can ever think of. The Northern lights are born when these small particles originated from the Sun crash into Earth’s atmosphere!
Ruska is a Finnish word and there is not translation for it. Ruska is also unique time in Rovaniemi and Santa’s village since this cycle from October to November and all the leaves in trees are glooming in different color shades like brown, orange, yellow and red. During this Ruska season, the scenery and landscape reminds of a painting. This beautiful season is due to colder nights and lack of sunlight. The plants, trees and berries like bilberries are getting ready for the frozen winter.
These natures’ own little magic tricks alone could have been behind Santa’s decision to move and establish Santa village to the magical Rovaniemi, but there is much more. The rumor has it, that Santa’s wife, also known as “Joulumuori” in Finnish, is originally from Rovaniemi and to keep her happy and satisfied, Santa was clever enough to choose Rovaniemi as the place for Santa village.
What actually then happens in the Santa’s village in Rovaniemi? There are for example a post office, where Santa gets letters from children all over the world what kind of presents they would like to have for Christmas and maybe some stories have they been naughty of nice.. Letters are coming from 198 countries and approx. half a million letters are being received per year, so there is much reading to do for Santa! Also in the village, you can visit the many workshops of the elves, where they build, knit, carve and sew the presents for the children. They work all year around, expect for that one day at Christmas, so they must be the most diligent persons ever known.
In the village, there is also a mystical and secret wheel to adjust time. This is very handy equipment Santa to own since this allows him at Christmas time to visit all the homes on time. This special wheel can also been seen at Santa’s village among Santa of himself, of course.
Rovaniemi all in all offers a unique place to Santa, Santa’s wife and his elves and an army of reindeer to work and give happiness and joy to all the visitors there. The surroundings are exceptional for everyone to experience Rovaniemi. The harshness of winter, coldness and snow underneath winter boots together with darkness and starry skies above give a magical touch to Santa’s hometown and its glittering lights. In the summertime, the never ending sunlight, the nightless nights, itself is exotic and interesting phenomena to experience Rovaniemi, Santa’s hometown. So in short, what else can one wish for? This must be the happiest place on earth.
